What goes wrong most often, what it actually means, and what to do about it. Most of these are configuration, not faults — and the server console and the F8 console usually say exactly which. Read them before opening a ticket.
Installation and Access#
ESC still opens GTA's pause menu
Type /pausemenu first. It opens the same menu without the ESC hook, so it tells you in one keystroke whether the problem is the menu or only its trigger. If /pausemenu works, check that Config.Menu.replacePauseMenu is true and that no other resource also takes over ESC.
I see GTA's menu for a split second
Nothing to fix. ESC does not travel through FiveM's control system — the game opens its pause menu by itself, so watching for it and dismissing it is the only approach that works. That costs one frame, and it is the same for every pause menu replacement.
"The interface is still loading, try again in a second"
Normal for the first seconds after joining, while the page loads. If it never goes away and the F8 console says the menu never mounted — releasing NUI focus, the resource was copied incompletely: the interface ships already built inside the folder, so re-copy the whole qs-pausemenu folder from your download and restart it.
"You are not allowed to open the pause menu creator"
Neither permission route is granted. Add the ace command.pausecreator in server.cfg, or put the player in a group listed in Config.Creator.adminGroups — Granting Creator Access has the lines. With no framework at all, the ace is the only route.
The permission is checked once per session. If you granted it after the player already tried, they need to reconnect.
The console says "no database resource found"
Neither oxmysql nor mysql-async was running when the resource started. Start one of them above ensure qs-pausemenu and restart. Until then the menu still opens and draws the bundled themes, but nothing — themes, the live theme, saved places — can be stored.
It says "framework loaded: standalone" but I run ESX or QBCore
The framework was not running yet when this resource started. With Config.Framework = 'auto' detection is tried again a few seconds later and the right adapter is swapped in — look for a second framework loaded line. If there is none, move your framework above ensure qs-pausemenu, or pin it with Config.Framework = 'esx' (or 'qb', 'qs').
The player card shows only the name, or rows are missing
Intentional. A value the framework cannot provide is left empty, and the module hides that row rather than printing $0. On standalone, money, job and identity are hidden. On ESX, hunger, thirst and stress need esx_status. If a field your framework does have is missing, its adapter in custom/ is where to add it.
"You cannot open the pause menu while you are down"
Correct behaviour: the menu does not open while the player is dead, so it cannot be used to escape a death screen.
Themes and the Creator#
"Could not save the theme"
The server refused it. The usual reasons:
The server already holds
Config.MaxThemes(50) themes. Delete one or raise the limit. The theme is over 512 KB — almost always an image pasted in as text rather than picked from
images/or linked by URL.The database is not running — see "no database resource found" above.
"Save the theme before setting it live"
The theme has unsaved changes. Press Save, then Set live — players only ever get what is stored.
Players are stuck in the menu
The theme has Escape closes the menu switched off and no module can close it. Add a button with the Close the menu action, or turn the setting back on. The creator shows a red warning on its Settings tab for exactly this reason.
I edited a built-in theme and the original is gone
Saving a built-in theme keeps your version in its place on your server. Delete your saved version and the original comes back. Next time, press Duplicate first and edit the copy.
An imported theme code is refused
The code was cut short while copying. Copy it again in full — it starts with QSPM1: and is one long line.
The Launch theme is in Spanish
That is how it ships. Config.Language translates the creator and the notifications, not the words inside a theme. Every string in a theme is a text module, so translating it is a pass through the inspector — or start from another theme.
A theme looks different on some machines
It uses a font the resource does not ship. Hackerman (Consolas) and Velvet (Georgia) are the two bundled examples; both use font stacks, so a machine without the first font lands on something close. Everything else uses Poppins, which is bundled.
The Map, Blips and Places#
The map is only a grid
The player's game cannot reach Rockstar's map servers. The radar grid drawn under the tiles is the fallback, so they still get a usable map with its own scale. Nothing to install on your side.
The map will not pan or accept clicks
Radar mode is on. It is look-only by design — panning, clicking and the Realistic button are off while the world turns with the player. Turn it off in the map's inspector.
The route is a dashed straight line
The game has no road route to give — an island, a rooftop, open water. The dashed line and straight distance are drawn differently on purpose, so a guess is never mistaken for a route. If it happens on an ordinary street, set a waypoint and run /pausemenuroute; the F8 output is what support needs.
No blips on the map
Check Config.Menu.showGameBlips. Blips appear a few seconds after the menu opens. Blips a script set to show on the minimap only are left out on purpose, the same way GTA's own pause map leaves them out — and a row with its eye shut in the legend hides that kind of blip.
Blips show the icon's name instead of their real name
The name could not be read from the game. Check that Config.Menu.readBlipNames is on. If the F8 console says reading was paused until the next restart or switched off on this PC, the game stopped answering and the resource stood down to stay safe. Either way, the reliable fix is to hand the names over yourself: the blip hook line in the resource that creates the blips, the SetBlipName export, or Config.BlipNames — all in Integrations.
A player cannot save another place
They reached Config.Places.limit (30 by default). Deleting one frees a slot; editing an existing one never counts against the limit.
Places I saved while testing in the creator are gone
Correct behaviour. Inside the creator the panel works, but places live in the draft and nothing is written, so testing the feature never fills your own map. Save places from the real menu.
The Realistic button does not appear
One of three switches is off: Config.RealisticMap.enabled on the server, Realistic button on that theme's map module, or the map is in radar mode. The creator shows a notice on the map's inspector when the server has it off.
Media and the Player's Photo#
A video shows a black screen
The file is an .mp4. FiveM's browser ships without the H.264 licence, so video must be WebM (VP9):
ffmpeg -i in.mp4 -c:v libvpx-vp9 -crf 34 -b:v 0 -an out.webmA video says it failed to load
The module keeps retrying underneath the message and clears it the moment the clip plays, so a passing hiccup does not cost the module for the session. If it never recovers, check the file name and that it is WebM.
My images and videos do not load at all
The resource folder was renamed. Media is served from https://cfx-nui-qs-pausemenu/, so the folder must be called qs-pausemenu.
One image does not show
Only .png, .jpg, .webp and .gif files in images/ are sent to players. A .jpeg file is listed in the creator but never arrives — rename it to .jpg.
A file I added is not in the creator's list
The folders are read when the resource starts, and new files are only sent to players after a restart. Restart qs-pausemenu after adding media. If the console says could not read images/ (io.readdir is missing on this server build), your server artifacts are too old to list folders — update them, or type the file's URL in the creator by hand.
Players take a long time to connect
Oversized files in images/ or videos/. Everything in those folders is downloaded by every player on join, so keep files sized for what they are. The world map is not part of it — it streams from Rockstar.
The player's photo does not show
An avatar URL set on the player card wins over the photo — clear it if you want the portrait. Check that Use the player's photo is on for that card and Config.Mugshot.enabled is true. The photo is taken a few seconds after spawning; if the game fails to render it, the card keeps its icon.
Error Keys#
When the creator or a saved place is refused, the server answers with one of these keys:
Key | Means |
|---|---|
The player may not use the creator.
Too many themes (
The theme is over 512 KB.
The database could not be written. Check the driver and the console.
The theme being deleted no longer exists.
What was sent was malformed — usually a damaged imported theme.
The player has no identifier to store places against — no framework character and no Rockstar licence.
The server did not answer in time. Usually a slow or missing database.
